Historical and Beautiful

One of the highlights of Freedom Outdoors Summer paddle programme will be this weekend at historic Wisemans Ferry, an easy 90-minute drive from the Sydney CBD. It will be our second weekend visit to the area, again hosted by Adrian Clayton, who knows the area well and has run many trips for Freedom Outdoors. We have two wonderful waterways to explore – some say they are the most attractive on the Hawkesbury system. Webb’s Creek and the Macdonald River are tributaries that wind their way down from the Mellong Range within the Great Dividing Range below Kindarun Mountain, northwest of Putty.

We’ll be staying at the impressive Del Rio Riverside Resort, where a range of attractive accommodation is available, from well-equipped villas to powered and unpowered campsites. The Resort is right on 3km of prime Hawkesbury River frontage, surrounded by a majestic, mountainous backdrop.

There will be two paddles over the weekend, up each of the waterways and, if there’s time, we’ll do some  exploration of the Hawkesbury River itself. Webb’s Creek and the Macdonald River are mostly wide waterways with overhanging trees, sweeping valley views and riverside shore break options. When European settlement commenced in this area, relationships with the Aboriginals were reasonably harmonious, until the tribes realised that the whites intended to stay and claim ownership of the lands. Ownership was completely alien to the Aboriginals, who cared for the land, but did not ‘own’ it. Kate Grenville’s multi-award-winning novel The Secret River, which deals with this issue, comes to life!

You should plan to arrive at Del Rio on Friday night, so that we can get set up and away promptly on Saturday morning. The weekend will conclude mid-afternoon on Sunday, so you can drive back to Sydney in daylight. On Saturday night, a group barbecue will be held or, if weather conditions aren’t suitable, there will be a visit to a local restaurant. There are shops at Wisemans Ferry, but none in the Park, so you should bring everything you need.  No food or alcohol will be provided, so BYO.

Kayak in our custom-built boats

For the two kayak trips, we will be using our superb Barracuda AR Duos. They are super stable (won’t tip up), have comfy padded seats and back supports and rudder systems for easy steering. They will be brought up from Sydney on a trailer.

Kayak hire for the entire weekend is only $220 per person, payable when you register for the event. This includes delivery from Sydney and return afterwards, your kayak, paddle and PFD (life vest). So, all you have to do is turn up and have fun! You do not have to do both paddles however there will be no refund if you choose not to do both.

Come on your own and we’ll partner you up -  or with friends.

Participation fees not refundable or transferable within a month of the trip. Car-pooling encouraged from/to Sydney.
