First Tuesday Kayak Club - Akuna Bay and Halvorsen History
Time & Location
About The Event
In the 1950s, the famous Lars Halvorsen built a series of luxury cruisers for Sydney’s rich and famous. At 10am we’ll set off from Akuna Bay with Justin Paine, the author of two recent books on kayaking and paddle to Cottage Point. We’ll stop for light lunch at the popular Cottage Point waterside kiosk and meet proprietor Trent Wilson, who was a super-yacht skipper in the Mediterranean. Then local charter boat skipper John Spry will tell us how he restored his beautiful 70-year-old Halvorsen cruiser, Kalinda. We’ll be able to inspect this classic boat with its stunning teak features which will take you back to the sophisticated yesteryears of the 1950s. Kalinda was taken to Los Angeles where it was lost by its owner on the throw of a dice in a craps game. One of the dice was thrown into the bilge of the boat, where it remains rolling around today. Back mid-afternoon.
